Eleanor Mae Thompson

Eleanor Mae Thompson

March 15, 1938 — November 2, 2024

Eleanor Mae Thompson was a beloved grandmother, talented gardener, and the heart of her family for over eight decades. Born in Springfield, Illinois, Eleanor grew up on a small family farm where she developed a lifelong love of nature and growing things. She married her high school sweetheart, Robert Thompson, in 1958, and together they raised four children in a home filled with warmth, laughter, and the aroma of her famous apple pie. Eleanor was known throughout her community for her generous spirit. She volunteered at the local food bank for over 30 years, taught Sunday school at First Methodist Church, and never let a neighbor go without a meal during hard times. Her garden was legendary — neighbors would stop by just to admire her roses, and she always sent visitors home with a bouquet. After Robert's passing in 2019, Eleanor found comfort in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who affectionately called her "Grammy Mae." She could often be found reading stories on the porch swing, teaching little hands to plant seeds, or sneaking extra cookies to anyone who asked. Eleanor passed peacefully at home on November 2, 2024, surrounded by her family. She is survived by her four children, eleven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Her legacy lives on in every garden she planted, every life she touched, and every heart she filled with love.
